Develop an original large-scale woodcut relief print from the first sketch through the final carved block in this 6 session class. Students will begin combing their concepts (or lack there-of c:) with drawing exercises designed to generate strong, workable images, then carve several favorite ideas at a smaller scale before selecting one design to develop into a finished 2-by-2-foot or 2-by-4-foot MDF block.

The class will cover enlarging and transferring an image, choosing tools and carving techniques, planning positive and negative space, and preparing and shellac-ing a large block for printing. Students will spend several sessions carving their final designs with individualized guidance throughout the process.

This class is includes automatic registration as a Woodblock Artist in Ink the Block Party, a community festival taking place September 19th behind our shop where completed blocks will be live printed using a steamroller. Participants will leave with their carved MDF block, a large-scale finished print, and an understanding of how to develop woodcut relief artwork from an initial idea into a monumental public print.
